Paddle the crystal-clear waters of Curaçao

This return trip takes you from Boka Sami to Bullenbaai and back, following the rugged cliffs of one of Curaçao's most beautiful stretches of coastline. Along the way, we pass the inlet of the old salt pans of Sint Michiel, small hidden sandy beaches, and the remains of historic Fort Vaersenbaai. Beneath the crystal-clear water, coral reefs and tropical fish can easily be spotted as we paddle along the coast. On our way back we stop at Kokomo Beach for a refreshing drink and a dive into the Caribbean blue.

We start this tour at the legendary Surfspot at the Spanish Water. From there, we paddle past the many boats anchored in the bay and the mangroves while making our way toward the outlet of this beautiful lagoon. Along the route, you'll see the impressive waterfront villas and the contrast between luxury living and the raw natural beauty that surrounds the area. Through the boka (the mouth of the bay) we enter the open Caribbean Sea. Following a stretch of rugged coastline, we pass Director's Bay and arrive at Tugboat, Curaçao's famous snorkeling spot where a shipwreck rests in the shallow turquoise water. Continuing along the coast, we paddle past the magnificent Fort Beekenburg, built in 1703. From there we arrive at the lively and local Caracasbaai.

Sint Jorisbaai is one of Curaçao's hidden natural treasures — a quiet and wide-open bay where nature, wind, and sea come together, far away from the crowds. As we paddle through the bay, there's a good chance we'll spot sea turtles popping up their heads beside the kayaks. In the middle of the bay lies a small island where seabirds gather to rest and sleep at the end of the day, creating a peaceful and almost untouched atmosphere. We follow the mangroves along the shoreline and visit remote empty beaches where we can stretch our legs, cool off with a refreshing swim, or simply enjoy the silence and scenery around us. When weather and sea conditions allow, we paddle toward the mondi — the outlet to the open sea — where the rugged north coast of Curaçao reveals itself in all its raw beauty. Along the way, we can often watch kite surfers performing impressive aerial acrobatics above the bay, powered by Curaçao's famous trade winds.

Along the route we pass famous beaches such as Grote Knip, Playa Forti, Playa Piskadó, Playa Kalki, and the hidden beauty of Playa Gipy. Towering cliffs, turquoise water, colorful fishing spots, and quiet coves make this an unforgettable paddle through the wild west side of the island. As we glide along the coast, kids from the houses high on the cliffs often wave down at us.

We launch from a small local harbor and paddle across peaceful waters, gliding quietly along the mangroves. Old Curaçao plantation houses overlook the historic salt pans. Also beneath the clear shallow water, traces of history can still be seen. While paddling, we keep an eye out for the old slave walls, still visible just below the surface — silent reminders of Curaçao's past. Seabirds like the impressive Osprey carrying fresh catch overhead, parading flamingos, resting pelicans and sea turtles surfacing beside the kayaks are all common sights here. We even might see the spectacle of a frigatebird pulling aerial stunts trying to steal the fresh catch from an Osprey. When the sea conditions allow it, we paddle through the boka — the narrow outlet to the open sea — and continue onto the crystal-blue Caribbean waters a bit to experience the amazing view of the rugged coastline from sea.

This tour takes us deep into the sheltered bay, where the mangroves form a natural maze along the shoreline. Their twisted roots create a unique underwater world that serves as a nursery for young fish, crabs, seabirds, and many other forms of marine life. The mangroves also protect the coastline and help keep the surrounding coral reefs healthy and alive. As we quietly paddle through the bay, we often spot herons hunting in the shallows, pelicans diving for fish, and even turtles may surface beside the kayaks. The peaceful atmosphere here feels far away from the busy island outside the bay. Depending on the conditions, we can discover small hidden beaches, or paddle toward the open sea to experience the contrast between the calm bay and the Caribbean Sea.
